Clarity
Clarity defines the purity or clearness of the diamond.
A blemish (also referred to as a birthmark) is inclusions
in the diamond that are obstruct the clearness and brilliance
of the diamond. The clarity helps the passage of light flow
through the diamond.
Not all inclusions are visible to the naked eye. Under
a 10x magnification microscope most inclusions can be seen
by the naked eye then that doesn’t mean that the stone
is perfect. If it’s affordable I would recommend that
you buy a stone with a minimal number of inclusions because
it reduces the brilliance or fire that the stone possesses
because inclusions restrict the flow of light.
F-Flawless- no inclusions; colorless
IF- Internally flawless- slight external inclusions
VVS1-VVS2- very very slight inclusions
VS1-VS2- very slight inclusions
SI1-SI2-Slightly included
I1-I3- Included- inclusions are visible to the naked eye
and the brilliance is minimal.
Cut
The cut refers to the diamonds proportions. It is based
on the original shape of the rough stone, location of the
inclusions and flaws to be eliminated, as well as, the preservation
of the weight and the popularity of the shape. Not to be
confused with the shape of the diamond a well cut diamond
has more ability to reflect light. The cut is often referred
to as the most important of the 4 c’s.
Carat Weight
The carat weight refers to the size of the stone. This is
the unit of measure for all gemstones. As the carat weight
increases the value of the diamond increases. Diamonds are
sold by the carat. 1 carat=0.20 grams or 1/5th of a gram.
Color
Color describes the amount of color that the diamond contains.
The color spectrum for diamonds goes from D (no color) to
Z ( deeply colored). Beyond Z is the range where the diamonds
are rich and vivid with color. The better the color the
higher the value.
All diamonds contain some amounts of nitrogen atoms and
the higher the amount the more yellow that will shine through
from the stone. A diamond should have no color at all, like
a drop of clear spring water.
